The United Nations Square is the new name given to the area where the Pier of Dâmbovița ended, and which, for a long part of the 20th century, was called the Opera Square.
The Opera was demolished however, in 1986, under the communist regime, and it moved in the building of the National Theatre of Bucharest, in University Square.
Today, the main points of focus when a citizen of Bucharest talks about the United Nations Square are the two twin towers, which rise above the square. One of them was built on the former place of the Opera building.
This area of Bucharest once had another name: The Senat Square. It was known under this name especially in the first part of the 20th century.
