Established in 1850 to ensure public safety, order maintenance and law enforcement, the Gendarmerie evolved with the Romanian society and has always been a factor of stability and security.
Between the components of the National Defense System that committed themselves to serve the Tricolor Flag in the Reconstruction War (1916-1918), there was also the Gendarmerie.
Starting August 15, 1916, when Romania declared war on Austro-Hungary and Germany, the Gendarmerie participated in the army’s actions with about 30 percent of the force, and the other gendarmes remained in the territory. Gendarmerie posts have made an important contribution to ensuring the mobilization and concentration of contingents called on weapons and their presentation to military units.
